Pet Portrait Project Preview

1. What type of pet will you photograph?
The type of pet I will shoot will be a cat.

2. Where will you shoot?
I will shoot outdoors or indoors by the windows.
3. What type of lighting will you use?
I was use direct sunlight and possibly flash.

4. What challenges will you encounter?
I will encounter trying to get the cat to stay still and also having to find the correct lighting that makes the background and subject look good and not washed out.

5. How will you overcome these challenges?
I will try to take the pictures as soon as possible and possibly use treats to lure the cat, I will also use flash if necessary.

6. Post an example for inspiration for your shoot. Explain what you like about the photo and how you will attempt to emulate or use for inspiration.

I really like this photo because the background doesn't look washed out, it looks green and vibrant but it's also not distracting the subject. The depth of field in this photo is great, and you can still see that it's outdoors. It also doesn't look like any harsh lighting was applied, it just looks natural.

Canon 6D versus T3i

1. What is the difference between a Full Frame Camera and a Crop Sensor?
A full frame image has better quality and wide-angle options. Shooting in natural light is also better for a full frame camera. Also it doesn't cause a lot of image noise. Crop sensors are better for shooting nature, wildlife and sports.

2. What are five advantages of the 6D compared to a T3i?
Five advantages of the 6D are it's 20.2 megapixel full frame sensor, 1080p video recording, ISO range of 50-102400, 11-point AF, and its accuracy in very low light situations.

3. What makes the autofocus of the Canon 5D Mark III better than that of the 6D?
The autofocus in the 6D only has one cross-type where as the 5D Mark III has 41 cross-types allowing you to focus in more than just the middle in photos.

Learning how to import the right way, the hard way

1. Copy as DNG – Images will be copied from a directory and into a .DNG file format.

Copy – Images will be copied from directory to a specified location.
Move – Images will be moved from directory to a specified location. Option is unavailable when importing from a memory card.
Add - Files will not be moved or copied in Lightroom  instead Lightroom will add them to your working catalog. Option is unavailable when importing from a memory card or USB drive.

2. You can use "Make a Second Copy To" only on options Copy as DNG, Copy and Move. It will not work for add.

3. You have to follow the path to know where the copied pictures are going.

Guest Speaker

1. How long have you been taking pictures?
2. What was the first camera you invested in?
3. Do people pay you for professional pictures?
4. How many photo shoots have you had?
5. Is this your only career?

____________________________________________________________________

Having the guest speaker come and talk to us really opened my eyes. I enjoyed hearing how his career started and is blossoming into something great. He was very open with discussing his ideas and the choices he made. I like how he told us which major to take if we wanted to open a business and how he suggested we talk to a professional and not a friend about how our pictures are and how we can better them in the future. Some of the challenges he mentioned were getting and finding the right equipment to start off with. I believe that the lights are more important as a photographer. You can arrange them in ways to make it look night or day which is simply amazing. You can use almost any camera to take great pictures but you just have to have your positioning right. He said the first thing you should do is take a business major. Then that'll help you start career.

Light Basics and Vocabulary (FIXED)

The Five Basic Lighting Techniques

Butterfly (or Paramount) --

  • 1. What effect does it create? It produces a symmetrical, butterfly-like shadow beneath the subjects nose.
  • 2. Why use it? It emphasizes high cheekbones and good skin, but it's less used in men because it hollows out the cheekbones and eye sockets too much.
  • 3. How many lights or light sources? It uses four light sources.

  • Loop --

  • 1. What effect does it create? It has a minor variation of Paramount lighting.
  • 2. Why use it? It's ideal for people with average, oval-shaped faces.
  • 3. How many lights or light sources? It uses three light sources.

  • Rembrandt--

  • 1. What effect does it create? It creates a dramatic light to illuminate your subjects.
  • 2. Why use it? To accentuate the shadow-side highlight.
  • 3. How many lights or light sources? It uses three light sources.

  • Split --

  • 1. What effect does it create? Illuminates half the face of the person.
  • 2. Why use it? Helps narrow a persons face, and for a weak fill.
  • 3. How many lights or light sources? 4 lights, with 2 sources.

    Broad and Short --

  • 1. What effect does it create? It illuminates the broad side of the face. Short light is when most of the broad side of the face is hidden from the light.
  • 2. Why use it? To narrow the face the short is the best option. The broad is good for making a face look more full.
  • 3. How many lights or light sources? 2 light sources.

  • ___________________________________________________________________________

Fill light - Used to light shadows and control Contrast and Lighting ratios.
    Key light (main light) -
Hair light - an accent light focused on the top of the head
Background light - Reveals the character of the background and helps separate it from the subject.
Shadowless -  reveals or conceals stylish and dramatic features.
Hard light - a direct source that produces highlights and dark shadows.
Soft light - indirect light that produces soft shadows and subtle highlights.
Grey card - a reflectance card used instead of a subject for a reflected light meter reading.
Reflector - Bowls that shape and intensify a lights beam.
Diffuser - A material placed in front of the light to soften highlights and shadows.
Intensity - the "strength" of an incident light
3:1 lighting ratio - a one stop ratio

    ___________________________________________________________________________

    Five Characteristics of Light

Direction: Which side is the light coming from?
Intensity: How bright is each light source?
Color: Is it a warm, natural, or dark color?
Contrast: Is the difference in shadows and highlights subtle or sudden?
Hardness: Are the edges of the shadows soft or hard?

    Year in Photos: 2013

In order for a photographer to take this photo he/she would have to hold their camera in an upward angle and tilt it in the correct position in order to get one egg straight. The lighting used in this picture is natural lighting by the sun, and to enhance this photo the photographer probably edited the lighting and exposure a little bit.
